Overview

Hairstylist is a 1800 hour, 2 year diploma program. You will learn how to perform cutting, colouring, highlighting, texture service and styling techniques on hair and an introduction to wigs, hairpieces, skin and nails. You will also develop artistry, salon management and customer service and communication skills.  Graduates have the opportunity of going directly to Level 2 of the Esthetician Program.

Courses

  • BUS 101 - Business Skills

    You will develop an understanding of operating a hair salon and employer expectations. Your studies will develop your awareness of legal and labour regulations, financing, salon design and maintaining shop inventory and equipment. The course covers practical application of personality theories to salon situations.

     

  • COMM 291 - Interpersonal Communications

    You will develop employability skills through the study of interpersonal communications theory and applications in the workplace. Learning outcomes include the importance of self-awareness and self-esteem, perception problems, verbal and nonverbal messages, and listening skills, creating positive communication climates and resolving interpersonal conflict.

  • HAIR 100 - Health Sciences for Hair and Skin

    You will explore sciences as they relate to providing service as a hairstylist. You will discuss general anatomy and physiology. You will describe hair and scalp properties, skin structure and growth, chemistry, and physics. You will use the metric system as applied in hairstyling.

  • HAIR 101 - Hair Service Preparation

    You will study the practice and theory in shampooing, finishing rinses, hair treatments, and scalp treatments. You will develop the knowledge required to recognize diseases and disorders of the scalp.

  • HAIR 106 - Basic Hair Colouring

    You will study all aspects of basic colouring and lightening techniques with emphasis on practical applications of temporary, semi-permanent, demi-permanent, and permanent hair colouring and lightening.

  • HAIR 107 - Basic Hair Cutting

    You will be introduced to the basic principles of cutting mechanics. You will gain an understanding of the use of hair cutting tools, angles, and the elevation of cutting techniques (in theory and in practical).

  • HAIR 113 - Clipper Cutting Techniques

    You will practice hair cutting techniques including clipper cut, shear/comb, and clipper/comb.

  • HAIR 114 - Basic Thermal and Wet Hair Styling

    You will study techniques for thermal and wet styling and identify styling products and tools. You will demonstrate blow drying techniques, basic wet sets and thermal styling.

  • HAIR 115 - Facial Hair Removal

    You will study types of facial hair and their removal. You will demonstrate basic facial and nape hair removal and the appropriate safety procedures. You will demonstrate basic eyebrow shaping and straight razor hair removal.

  • PRAC 200 - Customer Service Practicum 1

    You will become familiar with salon practices and gain experience in providing hairstylist services to clients under the direct supervision of an instructor. You will practice standards of salon professionalism and effective communication skills. You will identify principles of teamwork, quality customer service, practices and procedures, salon leadership skills, and conflict resolution strategies. You will practice basic haircutting skills, hair colouring skills, hairstyling skills, and basic facial hair skills. You will practice reception duties and retail functions for a salon. You will organize records, inventory, and a salon dispensary.

  • PRAC 201 - Customer Service Practicum 2

    You will expand your experience and gain independence in performing hairstylist skills as you operate a salon under instructor supervision. You will adopt sanitation and safety procedures and practice standards of salon professionalism, practices, and procedures and identify a personal conflict resolution style. You will demonstrate teamwork, effective communication skills, and effective customer service. You will demonstrate basic haircutting skills, hair colouring skills, hairstyling skills, and basic facial hair skills. You will demonstrate reception duties, retail functions, and salon leadership skills. You will organize records and manage a salon dispensary.

  • PRAC 202 - Customer Service Practicum 3

    You will operate a salon and perform basic hairstylist skills with minimal instructor supervision. You will apply sanitation and safety procedures and demonstrate salon practices and procedures, conflict resolution techniques, and problem-solving. You will demonstrate effective client consultation and retention practices. You will independently perform basic haircutting, colouring, hairstyling, and facial hair skills to industry standards. You will perform reception duties and retail functions for a salon and apply leadership skills by managing a salon. You will manage records and operate a salon dispensary.

  • SANT 108 - Health, Wellness and Sanitation

    Your studies will focus on safety, personal health, and sanitation as they relate to hair services. You will also study relevant safety concerns such bacteriology, health risks, and diseases.

  • SEM 100 - Hairstylist Professional Development 1

    You will participate in a professional development experience to enrich your industry contacts, increase your product knowledge, and learn about the latest technology and techniques. You will demonstrate new techniques gained from this professional development experience.

  • WORK 104 - Work Placement Practicum

    To help you in your final preparations for employment, you will spend one week in industry. You will have the opportunity to observe in the work environment and become familiar with the everyday customer relations and working schedules of a salon.

  • HAIR 105 - Chemical Texture Services

    You will study and practice all aspects of chemically treating the hair either through permanent waving or chemical relaxing.

  • HAIR 108 - Advanced Hair Colouring and Lightening

    You will focus on specialized colouring techniques with emphasis on practical applications. You will learn advanced lightening and toning, creative lightening techniques, and specialized colouring techniques.

  • HAIR 110 - Advanced Hairstyling

    You will pre-plan and perform an individualized hairstyle by analyzing the elements of design and suitability of a hairstyle to suit your client’s needs. The course expands on the basic mechanics of hairstyling to help you create special effects using specialized styling techniques.

  • HAIR 111 - Advanced Hair Cutting

    You will expand on basic hair cutting skills and the significance of hair in Indigenous cultures. You will apply drafting for customized haircuts and perform a style cut of your own design. You will perform style cuts for long, medium length, short, and very short hair.

  • HAIR 112 - Advanced Chemical Waving

    You will expand on your skills in chemical texturing and discuss techniques for advanced chemical waving. You will perform wraps for short, medium, and long length designs.

  • HAIR 200 - Braiding and Hair Additions

    The course is an introduction to the basic principles of hair braiding techniques. You will discuss the history of hair addition and the significance of braiding for Indigenous cultures. You will describe braiding tools and techniques and describe services for wigs and hair additions. You will perform hair addition services and braiding techniques.

  • HAIR 201 - Journeyperson Practical Exam Preparation

    You will demonstrate mastery in performing all hairstylist services. You will participate in a mock Journeyperson evaluation.

  • HAIR 202 - Advanced Thermal and Wet Hair Styling

    Building from Thermal and Wet Hair Styling 1, you will identify advanced hair styling products and tools. You will demonstrate advanced wet sets, advanced drying techniques, and advanced thermal iron techniques.

  • HAIR 203 - Facial Hair Removal and Colour

    You will study types of facial hair and their applications. You will demonstrate facial and nape hair removal, facial hair colour, and eyebrow shaping.

  • PRAC 203 - Customer Service Practicum 4

    You will operate a salon and demonstrate advanced hairstylist skills with moderate supervision of an instructor. You will apply sanitation and safety procedures and perform standards of salon professionalism as you demonstrate salon practices and procedures. You will demonstrate conflict resolution and problem-solving techniques, effective client consultation, and client retention practices. You will perform advanced haircutting, colouring, hairstyling, chemical texture, and facial hair skills to industry standards. You will perform reception duties and retail functions for a salon and apply leadership skills by managing a salon. You will manage records and inventory and operate a salon dispensary.

  • PRAC 204 - Customer Service Practicum 5

    You will operate a salon and perform advanced hairstylist skills with moderate supervision of an instructor. You will perform sanitation and safety procedures and standards of salon professionalism. You will perform conflict resolution, problem-solving, and effective client consultation, and establish a clientele. You will demonstrate independent advanced haircutting, colouring, hairstyling, chemical texture, and facial hair skills to industry standards. You will perform reception duties and retail functions for a salon and apply leadership skills by managing a salon. You will manage records and inventory and operate a salon dispensary.

  • PRAC 223 - Advanced Customer Service Practicum

    You will operate a salon and perform advanced hairstylist skills with minimal supervision of an instructor. You will attend Indigenous cultural events and perform standards of salon professionalism. You will apply sanitation and safety procedures and conflict resolution techniques. You will perform personalized treatments and advanced skills to industry standards, including haircutting, colouring, hairstyling, chemical texture, and facial hair skills. You will perform reception duties and retail functions for a salon, manage records and inventory, operate a salon dispensary, and apply leadership skills by managing a salon.

  • SANT 200 - Health, Wellness, and Public Safety

    You will study necessary skills for health, wellness, and public safety. You will apply personal wellness, perform personal hygiene and grooming standards for hairstylists, and examine legislation for occupational health and safety.

  • SEM 203 - Hairstylist Professional Development 2

    You will participate in a professional development experience to enrich your industry contacts, increase your product knowledge, and learn about the latest technology and hairstylist techniques. You will perform new techniques gained from this professional development experience.
