Continuing Care Assistant 2022-2023

Overview

Demand for health-care workers is high, and that includes demand for continuing care assistants. If you enjoy caring for others, and if you want to get into the workforce quickly, the Continuing Care Assistant program might be just what you’re looking for.

As a continuing care assistant, you’ll work directly with clients in long-term care, home care, assisted living, some areas in acute care, and even special needs classrooms. You’ll help them with mobility, personal care, assisting them to eat their meals, and medication monitoring. It’s a face-to-face, people-focused job.

Not included:  Clinicals, Helping Skills, Interpersonal Communications, Safe Environment, Personal Competence, Body Systems, End of Life Care, PART, TLR, and FoodSafe. PLAR can be used to substitute for clinicals.

Tuition: cost is per module, and must be paid at least two weeks before each course's start date.

Admission Requirements

No admission requirements necessary. Students can start immediately without credentials or without proof of English Language proficiency. However, these students must first complete 24 credit units before they can take Post-Acute Care or Assisting with Special Procedures modules.

NOTE: Tuition must be paid two weeks or more before the module's start date.

Note:
A criminal record check, vulnerable sector search, first aid certificate and WHMIS will be required, at students cost.

  • HUMD 187 Human Growth and Development

    You will learn the physical, social, intellectual and emotional aspects of human growth and development from infancy to old age. You will also study the effects of aging on society.

  • SPCR 184 Post-Acute Care

    You will acquire the theory and develop the skills needed to help clients meet their needs in the post acute care phase. This may include post surgical clients or clients with recent acute medical conditions.

  • SPCR 103 Assisting with Special Procedures

    You will be introduced to the Continuing Care Assistant’s role in assisting with special procedures. You will learn the concepts of delegation, carry out basic measurements, perform simple treatments and be introduced to client assessment. You will also learn the Continuing Care Assistant’s role in assisting clients with medications.

  • SPCR 285 Special Needs 2

    Your studies will cover the basic needs and interventions of clients with infectious diseases, cancer, altered mental abilities, disruption in mental health, and alcohol and drug dependency. You will learn the specific care required for bariatric clients.

  • DEMC 100 Dementia Care

    You will study the types, behaviors and assessment techniques for dementia. You will learn how to promote optimal levels of functioning throughout the disease progression and manage critical incidents. Issues related to institutional care placement and the impact dementia has on the family will be examined.

  • SPCR 101 Observing, Recording, Reporting

    You will learn written and oral communication skills required in the work place. The course content includes basic concepts of simple arithmetic, basic medical terminology, concept mapping, observing and reporting on client’s status, client and personal work plans.
